India’s 5G rollout is widely awaited as the nation is waiting for the network of the fifth generation to carry access quicker than ever. Jio, Airtel, and Vi have both been working to render the network in the country a fact that will link practically anyone and anything together, including computers, artefacts, and gadgets such as 5G-capable smartphones. So, the big question is When 5G will launch in India? and where are the plans of Jio, Airtel & Vi?
Many of the advantages of 5G are faster multi-Gbps rates, reduced latency, and greater reliability relative to previous-generation cell networks. The network also provides consumers with usage cases against, among others, AR/VR, AI, and high-speed broadband.
In 5G launches, countries such as the US, South Korea, Europe, and China have already raced ahead. Can India enter the 5G countries’ bandwagon in 2021?
When 5G will launch in India?
A little complicated is the answer to this query. Although Jio is expected to introduce 5G in India later this year, Airtel claims it will take anything from two to three years for 5G networks to develop sufficiently for the domestic telecom industry. Additionally, the government has not yet declared the selling in India of the 5G spectrum.

5G frequency bands
In India, the 5G frequency bands are technically inaccessible. In March 2021, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is hosting auctions of 700 MHz to 2,500 MHz, however, as per Indian telecom operators, it will be insufficient and adverse to the country’s 5G rollout.
The spectrum purchases of 3,300-3,600MHz, which are expected for the 5G network, are suggested by telcos.

Plans for Jio 5G
- The introduction of Jio 5G is scheduled for H2 2021.
- The network will be operated by hardware and technology components built indigenously.
Jio would pioneer India’s 5G network revolution. The company’s founder, Mukesh Ambani, has stated that by introducing 5G in the second half of 2021, it would take the lead in the country’s network. Jio reports that thanks to Telco’s converged network architecture, it can quickly migrate from 4G to 5G network. The indigenously built network, hardware and technology components would power Jio’s 5G, Ambani said.
It is assumed that in the upcoming auction, the telco will purchase 700MHz to meet its 5G aspirations, unless the government confirmed the auction of 3300-3600MHz, which is already internationally common for 5G implementations, before March 2021. The production of Jio is also expected.
Plans for Airtel 5G
- Airtel is preparing for 5G, however, in 2021 the firm is unlikely to deploy the network in India.
- In 2018, India held the first 5G trial with Huawei in Gurgaon.
Airtel is yet to announce its intentions to introduce 5G in the country. The firm argues that it takes more time for the new wave of mobile technologies to be phased out around the world. The 5G ecosystem in the country is underdeveloped right now, according to Airtel chief executive Gopal Vittal, and the bandwidth is pricey. “Spectrum cost, which is way over the top, is the fundamental problem with 5G,” he said.
That said, Telco is ready for 5G. In 2017, Airtel announced the launch of the first state-of-the-art Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) infrastructure from India, which is a crucial enabler for 5G networks. In Bangalore, Kolkata, and many other regions in the country, the business has already deployed the technology.
Plans for Vi 5G
- As soon as the state auction bandwidth, Vi plans to introduce 5G.
- The company has updated the 5G architecture of its 4G network.
As soon as the spectrum is made accessible via sale, Vi aka Vodafone Concept is all ready to roll out 5G in India. The company also updated the 5G architecture of its 4G network and other innovations such as dynamic spectrum refarming (DSR) and MIMO. Most of our network is 5G-ready. We would be ready to unleash 5G as the 5G auction happens.
There is a need, however, to establish cases of the Indian 5G application. India is special and certain cases of global usage might not be appropriate,’ said Vodafone Concept MD and CEO Ravinder Takkar during last year’s AGM conference.
5G experiments with different manufacturers, including Huawei and Ericsson, have also been suggested by Telco.
